In 2008 alone, 27,281 organ transplantations were performed in the United States. This figure represents a large number of patients who might seek medical care in an ED. In addition, current survival rates are rising. In 1998, 1-, 3-, and 5-year survival rates were 70.7%, 54.8%, and 42.6%, respectively, for lung transplant recipients. In 2009, the rates were 79%, 63%, and 52%. Although survival rates for lung transplantation lag behind those for other solid organ transplantations, enhancements in immunotherapy will probably continue to advance.
